Neonatal Care
Neonatal care is the type of care a baby born premature or sick receives in a neonatal unit.
- Level I: Well newborn nursery
- Level II: Special care nursery.
- Level III: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
- Level IV: Regional neonatal intensive-care unit (regional NICU)
Overview
When babies are born prematurely, their bodies may not be ready. Their heart, lungs, stomachs, and skin may need help and support to survive. A neonatologist provides the specialized care these newborns need. In other cases, a newborn baby may have other medical needs a neonatologist can help with.
Newborn babies who need intensive medical care are often put in a special area of the hospital called the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU has advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to give special care for the tiniest patients. NICUs may also care areas for babies who are not as sick but do need specialized nursing care. Some hospitals don’t have the staff for a NICU and babies must be moved to another hospital. Babies who need intensive care do better if they are born in a hospital with a NICU than if they are moved after birth.
Symptoms & Diagnosis
Neonatal disorders mean disturbance of normal state of body, organs and abnormal function of a newborn. Obstetricians play a major role to minimise the number of neonatal disorders.
